What Is Compounding?

Medication designed around the individual patient

Compounding allows a pharmacist to prepare a prescription in a customized strength, dosage form, flavor, base, or ingredient profile based on the prescriber’s directions and the patient’s needs.

01

Customized Formulations

A prescription may be prepared in a strength, form, or combination that is not commercially available when directed by a prescriber.

02

Ingredient-Sensitive Options

Customized medications may be prepared without certain dyes, preservatives, fillers, flavors, or other inactive ingredients when appropriate.

03

Alternative Dosage Forms

Depending on the prescription, medication may be prepared as a liquid, cream, ointment, gel, capsule, or another appropriate dosage form.

04

Pediatric Compounding

Children who have difficulty swallowing tablets may benefit from a prescribed liquid or flavored preparation designed around their individual needs.

05

Hormone Support

Compounding may provide customized hormone strengths or dosage forms when prescribed as part of an individualized treatment plan.

06

Collaborative Care

The compounding pharmacist works with patients and prescribers to understand medication needs and prepare the prescribed formulation.
